This important vine variety for Spain,
which was thought to have disappeared, is celebrating
a comeback and is gaining in esteem.
Over 100,000 hectares of Bobal are planted in the higher
regions of the Levante, especially in Utiel
Requena. Bobal is a very difficult grape to grow
because the individual grapes mature at different times
and vary greatly in size. It is possible that overripe
grapes ripe and unripe grapes are all present on the
plant at one time. But when it is successful, Bobal
produces very complex, and elegant wines that are full
of character.
Wine
Generally intensive color, high in acidity, low in alcohol,
fresh, not very aromatic.
